“When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on His glorious throne.” Matthew 25:31
Sometimes things happen in your life that are so unusual, so out of the norm, that you can’t help but remember them. Sometimes they are serious, sometimes they emotional, sometimes illuminating, and sometimes just plain funny. And then there are those happenings that are all of these all at once.
One that always pops back into my mind when Christ the King Sunday comes along involves an unruly crew of movers. We were finishing yet another military move one hot July day in Oklahoma many years back. The temperature was about 110 degrees in the shade. Thousands of pounds of boxes had been moved that day. And it seemed like the know-it-all driver who was supervising the moving crew had something to say about the contents of every single box. Truly, this man was like Cliff Claven from Cheers on steroids!
As the day grew hotter and the boxes grew heavier, his never ending pontificating on every subject was finally too much for the crustiest old man on the crew. The old man turned to me in frustration at driver Cliff and said: “You know Major Little, I don’t know about you but I don’t want to know everything! That’s a huge burden, you know? It’s hard enough just being me much less having to run the entire world! I am happy letting God do that!”
What a wonderful gift to know that Christ is truly is King! The revelation of this truth by the Holy Spirit to us means that all of the cosmos, all of history, and most of all your life is in His loving hands! Your salvation doesn’t rely at all on you!
Thank the Good Lord, that we don’t get a vote on how your eternal future turns out! The Kingdom of God is not a democracy! It’s a benevolent monarchy. God gets what He wants and He has publicly declared that what He wants most of all is YOU! You don’t need to fear the coming of the last day because very same Jesus who died for you is also the one who judges you!
My friends, this good news for us right now as we continue on our earthly journey. Because God has declared us righteous for the sake of Jesus Christ the King, it also means that there is no Christian self-focused personal improvement project to engage in anymore. You are free from focusing on yourself because the Son has come to you, spoke the Word, and set you free. Whom the Son sets free is free indeed!
You don’t need to worry about what the future will be for you. No matter what happens, God has promised to be there with you every step of the way to make sure you make it back home to Him. The promise of His grace for you opens up not only the ultimate future but the immediate future too. He has promised to be with you in every little thing in your life even if you are just heading over for a bit of breakfast and coffee at the Corners! Think about that one, my friends – coffee and eggs with Jesus!
I don’t know what the future holds for you my friends, but I do know that God will be with you in it every step of the way. In all the triumphs, all the good times, all the victories but also in all your failures, your bad times, your suffering, and even in your sin and dying. Christ will be with you in everything continually making life out of death to open up a new tomorrow eternally just for you.
We know all this is true as Lutheran Christians because the purpose of life is not to merely transcend ourselves, merely to be better people and have better things for ourselves, but it is to die daily to self in our Baptisms so that Christ may rise and live and do His work in us and through us.
It is to not think of ourselves too highly as Paul once wrote but receiving the life we are given by Christ each day without expectations; that’s faith. And we can do this because we are so utterly confident of the end because we already know the end. God’s favorable judgement of forgiveness of sins, salvation, and eternal life has already been completed in Jesus Christ – for you.
